Trey Mendez was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. Growing up in a South Texas border town taught him the value of hard work and perseverance. From an early age, his parents stressed the importance of setting a goal and striving to achieve it. A product of the public school system in Brownsville, he graduated from the Gladys Porter High School of Technology and went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from the University of Texas at Brownsville in 2002. Three years later, he graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and moved back to Brownsville with a goal of making a difference in the lives of the people in his community.

Mendez was elected Mayor of Brownsville in July 2019 and ended his term in May 2023. Prior to becoming Mayor, he served 9 years as a Trustee for Texas Southmost College, the fastest growing community college in the State. In 2020, he was accepted to the Harvard Kennedy School program for Senior Executives in Leadership. In September of 2021, Mendez was one of 37 worldwide mayors selected to participate in the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. Mendez has been invited as a panelist and participant in the Yale Mayors College and CEO Summit from 2021-2023.

Mendez has been named a SuperLawyer in 2022 and 2023, a peer nominated designation reserved for only 5% of all attorneys in the state of Texas.
